Which plant drink for overnight oats? Protein, ingredients and allergens

The right plant drink for overnight oats depends on the specific carton, your preferences and any allergies. Compare protein per 100 ml, check added nutrients and read the ingredients before choosing. Do not treat oat, soya and almond drinks as nutritionally interchangeable.

A short shopping checklist

  • Protein: compare the protein row on the same per-100-ml basis, then consider how much drink your recipe uses.
  • Ingredients and allergens: check both the drink and the dry breakfast mix, including any precautionary allergen information.
  • Added nutrients: look for the actual nutrients listed, not just the word plant-based.
  • Taste and use: choose a flavour you enjoy with your oats and follow the carton instructions.

EU nutrition-labelling guidance explains the per-100-g or per-100-ml basis and the distinction between food as sold and prepared food. Compare equivalent products on an equivalent basis, rather than one brand's serving against another brand's 100 ml.

Fortification is a separate question from protein

The German Nutrition Society (DGE) notes that plant drinks vary in composition and are not all fortified. When replacing dairy with plant alternatives, it advises attention to calcium, iodine, vitamin B2 and vitamin B12. A protein figure alone does not answer those questions. Check the specific label rather than assuming every carton contains all four nutrients.

A soya-free drink does not make every oat mix soya-free

The current Granuu Strawberry Symphony ingredient list includes soy protein isolate as well as oats. Choosing an oat or almond drink does not remove that soya ingredient from the finished breakfast. Vegan does not mean free from allergens. Check the current packs before buying or serving food to someone with an allergy.

Turn the choice into a morning routine

  1. Choose a drink after checking its label and the mix's ingredients.
  2. Measure the dry mix and liquid for your chosen preparation method. Keep the carton details if you want to calculate nutrition.
  3. Mix using the product instructions and the preparation guide. Overnight preparation includes refrigeration time; it is not the same as active mixing time.
  4. Follow the drink's storage instructions, including after opening, and refrigerate an overnight mixture as directed.

Quick questions

Does barista mean more protein?

Do not use that wording as a substitute for the nutrition table. Read the protein row on the carton you are buying.

How do I calculate protein in the finished breakfast?

Add the protein from the weighed dry mix, the measured drink and any toppings using their actual labels. Do not quote a dry-mix value as the finished-meal total. Our portion and label guide explains the calculation.
