Frozen berries in overnight oats: heat first, chill for breakfast

For overnight oats with frozen berries, prepare the berry topping separately: heat it thoroughly, cool it promptly and refrigerate it before adding it to your breakfast. Leaving frozen berries to thaw in an oat jar is not the same as heat treatment. Doing the topping and oat base the evening before leaves only assembly for the morning.

This guide concerns frozen berries bought separately as a topping. It does not change the preparation instructions for the dry Granuu mix or require you to cook the whole breakfast.

Why heat frozen berries before adding them?

Germany's Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) advises heating frozen berries to around 90 °C to inactivate heat-resistant viruses. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland recommends boiling imported frozen berries for one minute. Follow the berry pack's cooking instructions too, including any longer cooking time.

These are food-hygiene recommendations, not a statement that every bag is contaminated. Simply thawing berries, soaking them overnight or blending them cold does not carry out the recommended heating step.

A simple evening-before plan

For one breakfast, set out your Granuu pack, the liquid specified on its label, a small portion of frozen berries, a saucepan, a clean spoon and separate food-safe containers. Choose the berry amount for your own taste. The topping is optional, not a required part of Granuu preparation.

  1. Heat the berries separately. In a saucepan, bring them to a boil throughout and keep them boiling for at least one minute, stirring so the mixture heats evenly. Follow any stricter instructions on the pack. Do not count thawing time as boiling time.
  2. Cool the topping promptly. Transfer it to a clean, shallow, heat-safe container. A cold-water bath around the container can help it cool faster. Keep bath water out of the food, then refrigerate the cooled topping in a covered container. Do not leave it on the counter for hours or pour it hot into your prepared cold oats.
  3. Prepare the Granuu base separately. For the shaker method, the current Strawberry Symphony label specifies 60 g dry mix with 350 ml milk or plant drink, shaking and then at least three hours or overnight in the refrigerator. Check your own pack and follow its instructions. See our Granuu preparation guide for the preparation options.
  4. Assemble when you are ready to eat. Stir the chilled base, pour it into a bowl and spoon on the cold berry topping. Keeping the topping separate lets you decide how much fruit and juice to add.

Quick morning assembly is not zero preparation time. Allow time the evening before for heating and cooling the berries, plus the labelled refrigeration time for the oat base.

Keep the prepared components chilled

Store both covered in the fridge until needed. BfR recommends a refrigerator temperature no higher than 7 °C, preferably 5 °C. This plan is for the following morning, not a week's worth of finished breakfasts. Follow the storage instructions of every ingredient. If taking the prepared breakfast to work, use a cool bag and refrigerate it on arrival.

What about protein in the finished breakfast?

The dry mix and the meal you eat are different quantities. The liquid and any toppings change the final composition. Use the actual amounts and the labels of every ingredient if you want a protein or calorie total. Adding berries alone does not establish that a finished bowl qualifies as high-protein. Our breakfast protein-label guide explains the distinction.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put the frozen berries straight into a cold shake?

That skips the heating step described above. For this method, heat the topping first, cool it promptly and use it cold.

Must I add extra berries to Granuu?

No. They are an optional serving idea. Prepare the dry mix according to its own pack, whether or not you add a topping.

What if I do not want to cook a topping?

Leave it out and use the labelled Granuu preparation method. You can still prepare the base the evening before. Find more quick breakfast ideas.

Choose your oat base

If you would like to try this serving idea, explore Granuu Strawberry Symphony or compare flavours in the Granuu Starter Pack. Check ingredients and allergens before ordering. The berry topping is a home preparation suggestion and is not included.
