Quick vegan protein-rich food: a practical shopping guide.

Looking for quick vegan protein-rich food? Start with foods you can actually prepare with the equipment and time you have: cooked pulses, tofu whose preparation instructions suit your meal, or an oat breakfast with a plant drink chosen by its nutrition label. A vegan label alone does not tell you how much protein a portion contains.

Three useful supermarket starting points

The German Nutrition Society's protein guidance (German) identifies pulses such as soya, lentils and peas, alongside cereal products, as plant protein sources. The following shopping ideas are Haferwelt editorial suggestions, not measured recipes or a ranking by protein content.

  • Cooked lentils, beans or chickpeas: look for a can, jar or pouch labelled ready to eat. Follow its instructions, use the drained amount when calculating a serving, and pair it with bread or a prepared grain and vegetables if that suits your meal. Dry pulses are not the same quick option; they need preparation according to the pack.
  • Tofu: compare protein per 100 g, the portion you will use and the preparation instructions. Some products are ready to eat, while others call for cooking. A sandwich or bowl is only a no-cook idea if every ingredient is suitable for eating that way.
  • Oats with a plant drink or plant-based yoghurt alternative: check the actual product labels. Soya, oat, almond and coconut products are not interchangeable for protein, calories or allergens. A sweet or creamy taste is not evidence of a high protein content.

Read the label in the order you will eat

  1. Check ingredients and allergens. Vegan does not mean allergen-free. Read every component, including spreads and toppings.
  2. Compare like with like. Use the same basis: per 100 g of the food as sold, drained or prepared, as specified on each label. Do not compare a dry lentil value directly with a cooked lentil serving.
  3. Calculate your portion. Protein per serving = labelled protein per 100 g × grams eaten ÷ 100. For a drink, use its per-100-ml value and millilitres instead.
  4. Add the whole meal. Include liquid, bread, dressing and toppings when calculating both protein and energy. Round only the final totals.

In the EU, the regulated term high protein requires at least 20% of the food's energy to come from protein, according to the European Commission. The foods above are starting points to check, not a claim that every suggested finished meal meets that condition.

A quick oat-breakfast option

Granuu Strawberry Symphony is listed as vegan. Its dry-mix declaration gives 24.9 g protein and 378 kcal per 100 g, equivalent to approximately 14.9 g protein and 227 kcal for 60 g before additions. Choose a suitable plant drink and check its label rather than counting its protein automatically.

Our quick high-protein breakfast guide gives timed methods and transparent finished-serving calculations. For the original methods, see the preparation guide (German version). Overnight soaking is advance preparation, not a meal that becomes ready immediately.

Quick questions

Do I need a specialised protein product?

You can choose ordinary foods as well as convenient mixes. Compare the portion, taste, preparation and price that work for you; a protein headline is not a complete nutrition assessment.

Is vegan protein food automatically suitable for weight loss?

No product category guarantees weight loss. This is a shopping guide, not a weight-loss programme or personalised nutrition plan.

Where should I start with Granuu?
